Designing a Household Coordination System
Building an app-first product to simplify shared tasks, expenses, and everyday household management
Building an app-first household management system to simplify coordination around shared tasks, expenses, and everyday responsibilities.
Role: Product concept and UX design
Scope: Household coordination
Household coordination often relies on improvised systems such as group chats, spreadsheets, or notes.
These methods create confusion around responsibilities, purchases, and shared expenses.
Although web tools existed for tracking tasks and expenses, adoption remained low.
Adopt an app-first product strategy to capture household activities in real time.
Mobile interactions make it easier for users to log tasks or purchases the moment they occur.
- analysed common coordination problems in shared households
- defined key product capabilities:
- task assignment
- shared expense tracking
- communal shopping lists
- designed a system that centralises household activity
- introduced a randomiser to distribute less desirable chores fairly
- created mobile-first flows to encourage regular use
The product provided a structured system for coordinating everyday household responsibilities.
The key insight was that many household conflicts are not behavioural problems but coordination problems.
